Suggestions for 50 Easy Swing tunes? The McGann Doctrine states that, when learning to play within the dictates of a genre, the would-be practitioner's first efforts should be directed toward thoroughly learning/memorizing fifty (50) tunes, which is to say their melody and chords, and presumably words.
In other words, I'm trying to play more swing jazz lately, but I wanna learn some easier tunes. The ones I've been doing, like All The Things You Are and Always, are beautiful but fairly sophisticated, and I think I might get a little more mileage by getting a couple dozen 'Button Up Your Overcoat' type numbers in my pocket.
So- anybody got suggestions for fifty easier swing tunes?

Re: Suggestions for 50 Easy Swing tunes? A lot of Lindy dancers consider many of the Basie tunes to be cornerstones of the genre. Corner Pocket, Splanky, Lil' Darlin, Silks and Satins, etc. Many of them have a pretty slow tempo and fairly simple melody, though the solos get pretty elaborate.

Re: Suggestions for 50 Easy Swing tunes? Hey Mandobart, The 50 tune version that I posted is a collaboration with Matt Sircely, who was responsible for the Django Fakebook. Many of the 50 were pulled from the Djangobook with the idea being a book of the most popular 50 tunes you would run into at a swing jam. I assembled this group of tunes to be used at the Mandolin Symposium swing jam sessions. The Djangobook is loaded not only with standards, but many obscure or at least less standard pieces. Seeing that they are both free pdfs, why no have both. I have a few copies of the 50 tune version with spiral binding and bring them to jam sessions or wedding gigs. Have fun with these tunes.
